Pre-Testing

Exam Basics

Comprehensive eye exams are performed by Dr. Matthew W. Gifford and Dr. Anita Patel. Not only will you be evaluated for current eyeglass and/or contact lens prescriptions, but you will also be checked for ocular diseases.

What's Included

Dilation is included in the comprehensive exam. Dilation is performed at routine office visits to get a complete look at the inside of the eyes. Only about 30% of the interior of your eyes can be seen without dilation. With a few eye drops, the doctor can see the inside of the eye in its entirety. If you do elect to be dilated, the effects of the drops last about 2-4 hours after your visit during which time near vision may be impaired as well as a significant sensitivity to light. Most people have no problem driving home afterward with the use of disposable sunglasses we provide.

If being dilated is not convenient for your schedule, we also have an OPTOS retinal camera. This machine takes a digital scan of your retina, without having to be dilated, and the images will be viewed with you during your exam. If your insurance does not cover this test, there is a $39.00 co-pay.

All Done

Your exam is finished and it's time to select your glasses and order your contact lenses. One of our floor staff will help you pick out comfortable frames that fit your style. They will also go over your insurance policy and discuss what lens options would best fit your needs and prescription. Your glasses will be ordered and ready for you in as little as two weeks.
